The Peninsula’s Newest Wine In A Can
By Emily Tyra | July 2, 2020
Yesterday Shady Lane Cellars launched two new wines plus a cider — each in cans — with a new brand called Brio. Just in time for the holiday weekend, you can pick up cans (as singles or four-packs) of Brio at Shady Lane Cellars. Cans are $7 each, with each can equivalent to two glasses of wine.
General Manager Rick DeBlasio says canned wine is something the staff at the Suttons Bay winery has discussed for some time and that the new brand, debuting under their long-established Shady Lane Cellars label, makes their estate-grown wine more portable.
“Brio is meant for the beach, boat, bike rides, camping, even book clubs,” DeBlasio says. “And it’s still 100 percent estate-grown, handcrafted from the ground up.”
Shady Lane’s winemaker Kasey Wierzba tells the Leelanau Ticker, “This new label is more geared toward distribution. Wine that is accessible but made with really great-quality Leelanau county fruit. Hopefully these will be products people will pick up and have fun with, not think, ‘am I spending too much? or ‘do I need to save this?’”
Brio Rose (11 percent ABV) brings flavors of fresh berries, white peach and tangerine. Brio Bubbly Vibes (10.5 percent ABV) is a take-anywhere sparkling wine for everyday celebrations. Brio Cider (6.7 percent ABV) is made from heritage Michigan apples.
DeBlasio says they are debuting Brio at the winery first, but intend to expand access to these canned products through wholesale across Michigan and later in areas of Indiana and Illinois. It is available at the winery now and will be available online starting the week of July 6.
Meanwhile, MAWBY’s infused bubbly in a can, which launched May 1, has become an instant hit, with Tropic — rosé bubbly infused with passionfruit juice and organic teas — temporarily sold out. (Sunlight, the tea-infused white wine bubbly is currently still available.)
Says Mike Laing, ‘Director of MAWBYness:’ “We are super pumped about how people have enjoyed these new bubblies. We didn't know how the products would be received; thus Tropic is temporarily sold out, a good thing.”
He adds the MAWBY winemakers intend to have Tropic back later this month — the week of July 27th specifically — and to have Tropic available year-round.
Look for MAWBY to release its next canned product, the red-wine based Roobi, on Labor Day weekend. “Roobi is our seasonal for the cooler months,” says Laing. “It’s infused with Rooibos tea and organic raspberry juice. It is light bodied, with bright red fruit aromas and flavors as well as an earthiness from the tea.”
