Suttons Bay Public Schools To Induct Inaugural Athletics Hall Of Fame Class

By Craig Manning | Feb. 10, 2025

Suttons Bay Public Schools (SBPS) will recognize two school district veterans this month as it inducts an inaugural class into its brand-new Athletics Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees are Todd Hursey and Dwaun Anderson, both of whom will be honored at an event scheduled for the evening of Friday, February 21.

Hursey worked at SBPS for 30 years, serving both as a teacher and as the high school boys golf coach. He led Suttons Bay to multiple Division 4 state championship titles, and was even inducted into the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association hall of fame in 2018. In 2023, Hursey left SBPS to take the head boys golf coaching job at Traverse City West Senior High, where he still coaches today. He is also the executive director of the Traverse City Junior Golf Association.

Dwaun Anderson is a 2011 graduate of Suttons Bay High School, where he led the boys basketball team to a state runner-up finish in the Class C division during his senior season – the best-ever finish for the Norsemen. Anderson’s success that season led to him being named Mr. Basketball, an honor bestowed by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan in recognition of the best senior basketball player in the state. Anderson was the first northern Michigan player ever to receive that particular honor, and no other local player has earned it since. Beyond his senior season, Anderson was a four-season varsity player, setting school records for career points (1,503) and career steals (295).

Both Hursey and Anderson will be honored at a ceremony scheduled for 6:45pm on February 21. The event will take place between the JV and varsity basketball games between Suttons Bay and Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s.
