Report: Leelanau Top Michigan County for Health Outcomes

By Art Bukowski | Nov. 6, 2023

Leelanau County has again been ranked as the state’s healthiest county in a study of Michigan’s health outcomes.

According to the University of Wisconsin’s 2023 County Health Rankings National Findings Report, Leelanau County ranks first in terms of health outcomes. The top five are rounded out by Clinton, Ottawa, Livingston and Oakland counties, in that order. The bottom five, starting with the worst, are Wayne, Genesee, Lake, Iron and Iosco.

Health outcomes for purposes of that study are based on factors that include length of life and quality of life. A large amount of data is compiled into secondary categories that inform those factors. Behavioral habits like smoking and drinking combined with the amount of available healthcare and environmental quality, among many other factors, all come into play.

The county was ranked 7th in a breakdown of health factors themselves, just behind Grand Traverse.
