Local Woman Pleads Guilty To Two Felony Charges In Relation To September 2024 Leelanau Deputy Encounter
By Craig Manning | March 5, 2025
A local woman charged with five felonies related to a drunk driving incident from last fall has taken a plea deal in the case.
On Monday, Jessica Perkins, 42, of Traverse City, pleaded guilty to two of the felony: driving while intoxicated and fleeing a police officer. Perkins was facing five felony charges overall, all from an incident last fall where she was accused of intentionally hitting the vehicle of a Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office deputy with her car and then fleeing the scene. As part of her plea deal, Perkins’ other three charges – including charges for destruction of police property and assaulting a police officer – were dismissed.
According to local police reports, Leelanau deputies confronted Perkins last September in connection to a separate malicious destruction of property complaint. Deputies said Perkins intentionally hit a patrol car with her vehicle, then drove off. In an ensuing chase, the suspect ultimately rolled her car.
The incident became state news in December, when MLive picked up the story. The month before, Perkins had failed to appear in court, prompting local police to issue a warrant for her arrest. The suspect was ultimately found and arrested in Venice, Florida, and extradited back to Leelanau County to face charges. At her arraignment in December, Perkins’ bond was set at $75,000.
