Fall In Leelanau County: Your Guide To The Offseason

By Craig Manning | Sept. 9, 2024

Another summer has come and gone, which means the offseason is fast approaching in Leelanau County. From the year-round businesses rolling out their autumnal offerings to the seasonal spots closing up shop until next spring, the Leelanau Ticker has your guide to the post-Labor Day changeover.

>Jacob’s Farm isn’t closing any time soon: The family-friendly destination typically stays open until the end of October. In the meantime, though, Jacob’s is kicking off its fall festivities. This past weekend marked the first days of cider and donuts at the farm, and those items will continue to be offered on Saturdays and Sundays for the rest of the fall. Jacob’s Farm has also opened its famous corn maze for the fall (pictured), and will keep it up and running every day of the week until the end of the season. This year’s theme? Big Top Circus.

>Notably, Jacob's Farm will not be the venue for the annual Flapjack & Flannel Festival this fall. The event is taking place instead at Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort in Grand Traverse County. It's scheduled for November 9.

>Next weekend is the last chance to hit the local tiki bar for the year: Paradise Cove Bar & Grill has announced that September 15 will be its last day for the season.

>Bulldog Blueberries, a popular U-pick blueberry farm at the south end of the county, had its final day of picking on August 31 and is now closed for the year.

>With U-pick season also in the rearview for Northport’s Hallstedt-Homestead Cherries, the farm is focusing its energies on sourdough bread-making workshops. HH Cherries will host six sessions of that series this fall, starting Wednesday, September 11 and finishing up on Thursday, November 7.

>Bay Burrito in Suttons Bay had its final day of service for 2024 on Wednesday, September 4. The business’s owners also run the recently-opened Bay Pizzeria, and had previously shared plans to move many of Bay Burrito’s employees over to the new establishment after Labor Day. Bay Pizzeria will stay open through the winter, and “might just have to create a taco pizza” to honor its sister restaurant.

>Village Cheese Shanty fans still have some time to get their favorite sandwiches: The Fishtown-based business plans to stay open 9-5 every day “thru October.”

>Lake Leelanau’s Capital Dog will be temporarily closed until Thursday, September 12, but isn’t done for the season just yet. The restaurant will re-open on the 12th and carry on with 11:30am-8pm hours Thursdays through Sundays for the rest of September.

>Taqueria Las Lagunas, the food truck that’s been serving tacos and other Mexican eats at Suttons Bay’s Barrels & Barrels all summer, is down to its final three weekends of the season. The truck is typically open Wednesdays through Sundays and will operate through the end of the month.

>The Leelanau Ticker reported last month that the Lake Leelanau-based shop Leelanau Gifts was going out of business. Yesterday officially marked the “last open day” for the retailer.

>Local gift shop/clothing store The Find North has operated three locations this summer – one in Northport and two in Leland. The business announced last November that it would be moving to a new Leland spot in 2024, at 102 North Main Street, but would also reimagine its original Leland space in the Harbor Shops on Lake Street as the “Find North Warehouse.” Now, The Find North is “winding down our time at the warehouse location,” and is offering 50 percent off everything in the store while supplies last.

>After reporting an “extraordinarily busy summer” – “We’ve had lines out the bakery doors many days,” stated an August 31 Facebook post9 Bean Rows is slowing down for fall. One element of that slowdown? New autumn hours for the farm market’s popular woodfired pizza bakery, which is open 11am to 3pm Wednesdays through Mondays.

>Also downshifting for the fall is Carlson’s Fishery. The Fishtown mainstay recently shifted to fall hours and is prepping for the last two months of its season. Carlson’s typically stays open through the end of October.

>As the Leelanau Ticker previously reported, River Club Glen Arbor is planning to remain open throughout the fall, with live music happening Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, “tailgate and putt-putt” parties occurring around major college and pro football games, and an “enhanced fall menu with cider, donuts, candy apples, and pumpkin or apple spiced margaritas.”

>Fishtown-based clothing and apparel boutique Leelanau Goods will close for the season on Sunday, October 27, with plans to reopen on May 1, 2025. The business, which actually started with a location in Santa Monica, California, will keep its west coast and online operations up and running through the winter. Owner Laura Siladke also says she’s throwing an end-of-season party on Friday, October 28 from 5-8pm, with 50 percent discounts on everything in the shop. “All are welcome,” she tells the Leelanau Ticker. “Drinks and fun will be had!”

>Blue Moon Ice Cream in Cedar hasn’t set a closing day just yet, but owners say they are “shooting for the usual ‘open through Halloween’ [schedule],” with their typical end-of-season college scholarship fundraiser to follow “on November 1 or 2.”

>This Saturday, September 14, marks the annual “chile roasting and corn shelling” event at Farm Club, described as a “hoedown” to celebrate the fall harvest. “We will be firing up our chile roaster for an autumnal food experience,” an event description reads. “We’ll be pouring our Masa Table Beer and featuring special menu items with roasted chiles and heirloom corn.” Other fall events at Farm Club include a “Field Social” on Thursday, September 19 and an “annual apple pressing day” scheduled for October 19.

>The Mill Glen Arbor is prepping for a busy season of events, according to Kelsey Duda of Fernhaus, the hospitality group that manages the property. On September 18, the Mill will partner with Leelanau’s Lakeview Hill Farm to “celebrate the end of tomato season.” The reservation-only “tomato dinner” will offer a nine-course tasting menu, with each dish themed around Lakeview Hill tomatoes. The tomato celebration will continue from September 18-22 at Supper (the Mill’s dinner restaurant) where diners will be able to order the full tomato dinner tasting menu or purchase the dishes a la carte.

Also on the docket at the Mill: a harvest dinner in collaboration with Boathouse Vineyards (October 2), the Mill’s first annual hog roast (October 23), a “Mill artist residency launch” featuring Michigan-born artist Jeff Kraus (October 25), and an Italian wine dinner in partnership with Vintage Wine Co. (November 6). Tickets for these events and others will be on sale soon, per Duda.

>In other Fernhaus news, Duda says the Mill is introducing a new “lounge” concept at Supper, featuring “a more casual menu served fireside in the upstairs lounge.” The new lounge menu launches this coming Thursday, September 12.

>Millie’s Pizza and Ice Cream, another Glen Arbor establishment that Fernhaus manages, is also getting a menu refresh this fall, as is Outpost, the café/coffee shop Fernhaus runs in downtown Traverse City.

>Finally, Fernhaus plans to keep Leland’s Riverside Inn open through the offseason again this year; last year marked the first time the Riv had ever operated through the winter.
