Sugar Loaf Resort’s New Owner Readies For Hotel Demolition

There was some action at the long-dormant Sugar Loaf Resort property last week: the owner announced today (March 18) that pre-demolition work — including removal of old maintenance materials, storage tanks and transformers from the hotel and other areas of the property — was completed in preparation for demolition of the hotel.

Demolition is expected to occur later this year, according to a press release issued by Envirologic, a Kalamazoo-based, environmental consulting firm which will oversee the demolition project on behalf of the owner.

This week the owner expects to release bid specification packages to qualified contractors to bid on the hotel demolition work. Exact timing has not yet been set and will be dependent upon contractor availability, methods used, weather and other factors, including local landfill capacity. The bid specifications require the contractor to comply with all permits, safety rules, state and federal regulations and proper material disposal/recycling protocols. The press release indicated that the overseeing firm, Envirologic, has over thirty years of experience managing projects of this type, and has strong relationships with local officials.

Ross Satterwhite, who represents the owner in the planning and execution of demolition activities, said, “The owner of Sugar Loaf remains focused on cleaning up the property and demolishing the hotel. We are pleased the first phase of this work is complete and look forward to finalizing plans for the hotel’s demolition. We are also very appreciative of the support from the township, county officials and residents.”
