Northport’s Nathan Scherrer Wins For Best Music Video At 2021 Grammy Awards

Northport, Michigan felt its collective heart swell with pride for one of its own Sunday when Beyoncé, Blue Ivy and WizKid won Best Music Video for "Brown Skin Girl" at the 63rd Grammy Awards

The Best Music Video award is given to the artist, video director and video producer, with the “Brown Skin Girl” collaborators including Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Jenn Nkiru as video directors; Lauren Baker, Astrid Edwards, Nathan Scherrer, and Erinn Williams as video producers.

Their video bested fellow nominees Future with Drake, Anderson .Paak, Harry Styles, and Woodkid.  (Nathan Scherrer was also a collaborator on Anderson .Paak’s “Lockdown” and Harry Styles’ “Adore You.”)

Scherrer — born in Northport in 1988 — attended Northport Public School from kindergarten to graduation, where he experienced freedom to customize his own high school curriculum to include film editing and music mashing. Check out this behind-the-music story from the archives of our sister pub, Northern Express, on how the Northport native then set his sights on becoming a Los Angeles–based music video producer, eventually launching his own production company, Freenjoy, with two Northport friends.
