An Evening With Leelanau County Native and CBS Sunday Morning Correspondent Martha Teichner

Leelanau native Martha Teichner, who is now a correspondent for CBS “Sunday Morning,” brings her new book to the National Writers Series, Thurs. Feb. 4 at 7pm.

In When Harry Met Minnie (available from Celadon Books Feb. 2), Teichner writes of the remarkable friendship and bonds formed when she sought a companion for her dog. 

Since joining CBS News in 1977, Teichner has earned multiple national awards for her original reporting, including 11 Emmy Awards and five James Beard Foundation Awards. Teichner was also part of the team coverage of the Newton, Conn. elementary school shooting, which earned CBS News a 2014 duPont-Columbia Award.

Teichner spent the first nine years of her life here; in her parents’ memory she donated 20 acres of family land near Lime Lake to the Leelanau Conservancy, now called the Teichner Preserve. 

Guest host Cynthia Canty will lead the conversation about Teichner’s touching narrative, which begins with a chance encounter at the Union Square Farmers Market that changed her world forever. Teichner’s friend knew someone who was dying of liver cancer, from radiation exposure after 9/11, and desperate to find a home for her dog, Harry. He was a Bull Terrier ― the same breed as Teichner’s beloved Minnie.
